53
students arrested at NUST
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
May 10, 2007
53 students
were yesterday arrested at National
University of Science and Technology ( NUST) after demonstrating
at the university campus. The students were protesting against exorbitant
fees being charged at tertiary institutions, the endless strikes
by lecturers and their mass exodus, and the unbridled attack on
Human Rights Defenders in Zimbabwe. Among the arrested are Student
Representative Council (SRC) President Clever Bere, and Themba Tapenduka,
an SRC member.
Riot police, armed with tear gas canisters, batton sticks and AK47
riffles invaded the university campus and started to indiscriminatly
assault students. NUST Vice President, Mehluli Dube said "the
scene reminds me of the one which resulted in the death of Batanai
Hadzidzi. We are afraid that Bere, who was on the run together with
me a few weeks ago might be brutally beaten." Hadzidzi who
was a student at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ), was murdered by
members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) during a peaceful
demostration at the UZ in 2002.
The arrested are currently detained at the Bulawayo Central Police
station. Lawyers from the Zimbabwe
Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) are representing the student.
