Female student threatened with rape
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
April 03, 2007

A female student leader at Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) in Mashonaland Central Province, Chiedza Gadzirai was yesterday night threatened with rape by the state securocrats from the dreaded Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO).

Chiedza, who is the Student Executive Council (SEC) Vice President at BUSE alleged that she first received a phone call from unidentified person before being paid a surprise visit by two unknown men clad in designer suits and dark glasses. The unwelcome visitors interrogated Chiedza on the whereabouts of Promise Mkwananzi, the ZINASU President and the Secretary General Beloved Chiweshe. In the process, they threatened Chiedza with rape and to infect her with the deadly HIV if she continues to harbour 'terrorists'. They left the University Campus in an Mazda Eagle Twin Cab vehicle without number plates.

Chiedza is one of the female students who were arrested in May 2006 over the high fees induced demonstrations, which rocked BUSE. She was denied bail and had to spent two weeks in the remand Prison in Bindura. They were represented by Aleck Muchadehama and Andrew Makoni from MMM legal practitioneers. They were, however, released on bail and the state had to drop the charges due to lack of evidence.

She was also arrested on the 13th of March 2007 together with ZINASU President Mkwananzi, ZINASU Coordinator, Washington Katema and four others at the magistrates courts for singing the national anthem in solidarity with the opposition and civic society leaders who were arrested and brutally assaulted on the 11 March 2007 in HighFields, Harare.
