    Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)

    Police arrested ZINASU Vice President, Gideon Chitanga and four others as he was addressing a student gathering at Masvingo Polytechnical College. They were detained at Masvingo Central Police station on a Tuesday, the 13th of March 2007. Chitanga and others were charged with inciting students to continue protesting over the ever deteriorating education standards in Zimbabwe. The students are still on class boycott.

    On going to court ,the Regional Prosecutor advised Detective Seargent Mukombe that the accused had no case to answer. The officer then went on to craft a new charge under the Miscellaneous Offences Act for distributing The Vangaurd, a bi-monthly students newsletter. Chitanga and others were forced to pay a fine of ZW$ 2 500.

    Meanwhile, police yesterday detained Masvingo State University Students Representative Council (SRC) Vice President, Edson Hlatswayo after a ZINASU Regional leadership had a successful and well attended consultative meeting at Morgester Teachers College. He was accussed of using 'inflammatory and provocative' language during the meeting.

    At Masvingo Polytechnic College, Masvingo State University, Morgenster Teachers College and Masvingo Teachers College students are still on class boycott. Edson hlatswayo is still in police custody.
