  • Students further remanded, lawyer refers matter to the Supreme Court
    Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
    February 28, 2007

ZINASU President Promise Mkwananzi, UZ Secretary General Maureen Kademaunga and NUST Legal Secretary Lawrence Mashungu have been remanded to the 28th of March 2007.

The Lawyer representing the three,Mr Bernad Chidziva has referred the matter to the supreme court on constitutional issues arguing that the charges are frivolous and vestaxious and threfore do not warrant the students to be continually brought to court. The Lawyer will also challenge the constitutionality of their arrest and raise the inhuman and degrading treatment that they were subjected to while in the custody of the police.

The student Leaders have instructed the Lawyer to challenge the sections of POSA that the police abuse to apprehend the students as being ultravires the constitution. ZINASU President Promise Mkwananzi has vowed to take the matter to the African Union and appealed to the lnternational students  and the lnternational comminity at large to pile pressure on the incumbent government to allow students to meet and discuss issues affecting them.He promised that the struggle would,in spite of the obtaining repressive environment continue unabated and further called on the students to embrace calls for a national class boycott to press for the alleviation of the problems bedevelling the students movement.
