    February 13, 2007

The Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) president Promise Mkwananzi and forty other students from the Harare Polytechnic College have been today, the 13th of February 2007, arrested and detained at the Harare Central Police station for holding a General Meeting.

The agenda was on issues of the ever deteriorating standards of education, the astronomical hikes in tuition fees and broader socio-economic and political pandemonium in Zimbabwe. More than 600 innocent, unarmed and hungry students who had gathered on campus for the Extra-ordinary General Meeting, were violently and brutally dispersed by the ruthless riot police and the non uniformed state security agents.

The General Meeting comes 11 days after the National Executive Council had an urgent meeting and gave the Government of Zimbabwe an ultimatum with clearly outlined demands to be addressed by TODAY the 13 th of February 2007. Students in Zimbabwe have thus resolved to go on class boycotts starting today the 13th February 2007.
