ZINASU
president summoned to University of Zimbabwe disciplinary hearing
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
September 20, 2006
The Zimbabwe National Students
Union President Promise Mkwananzi has been summoned to hearing which
will take place at the University of Zimbabwe on Friday the 22nd
of September 2006.
The hearing comes on the heels of his
arrest, detention and beating, being accused of inciting students
to support the ZCTU
protests. He is being charged with a number of frivolous and
vexatious charges ranging from addressing students at other Institutions
of Higher learning thereby putting the name of the University into
disrepute to inciting students to resist the new fees structure.
Sources close to the university authorities
reveal that the authorities have given the university security instructions
to work in cahoots with the Proctor’s office to find a valid reason
to expel Mkwananzi who is regarded as the rotten tomato among the
students.
However, Zimbabwe
Lawyers for Human Rights have dismissed the charges as part
of a grander strategy to frustrate the academic progress of those
students perceived to be critical of the Government. Early this
year four student Leaders, Mfundo Mlilo, Collen Chibango, Hantchel
Winterhold Mavhuma and Wellington Mahohoma were expelled for life
on spurious and concocted charges. They contested the legality of
their expulsion to no avail, further enhancing suspicions that the
courts are colluding with the executive in persecuting those viewed
as Government critics.
ZINASU condemns the continued persecution
of students activists.
