Student leaders harassed at University of Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
August 24, 2006

Police in evil alliance with the University of Zimbabwe security yesterday descended on the ZINASU orientation stand at the campus. UZ is having its orientation week, where first year students are given induction to the college life. As usual, ZINASU in partnership with the local UZ students union had set up a stand where they were distributing literature and pamphlets on human rights, HIV and AIDS awareness and T-Shirts written Education for all and not for the elite’.

The visibly disgruntled and hungry police officers confisticated all the literature and some t-shirts much to the surprise of the first year students. Furthermore they pulled down the ZINASU tent in the villainous ‘murambatsvina style’ and threatened to arrest anyone trying to get an explanation on their act of lunacy. In the melee, three students were badly assaulted as they tried to resist the needless move by the police officers.

However, we as ZINASU condemn the barbaric acts of banditry by the overzealous state agents in connivance with Nyagura who are using the police officers and UZ security officers as surrogates to oppress and suppress innocent students. The continued abuse and misuse of police officers to attack students only shows that common sense has been murdered and now absurdity is rampaging with impunity. Furthermore we want to remind the ‘headless’ government of Zimbabwe that education is a fundamental human right and no student must be denied of this freedom.
