Chaos in higher education
Educators Association for Human Rights (EAHR)
August 19, 2006

Educators Association for Human Rights (EAHR) is concerned by the double standards and contradictions being practiced in Zimbabwe's educational institutions particularly in Higher and Tertiary Education. The association is mostly appalled by the inconsistencies on the position of fees between government and college authorities.

Recently when some students resisted fee increases, the high court ruled in favour of the students. The court's reasoning was that students' college fees should not be more than the educational loans which the students receive from government thus illegalising fee increase without a corresponding increase in loans. The circus went further with the Hon Minister of Higher Education Dr Stan Mudenge issuing a statement to the effect that the government has no policy on sending student defaulters home. Surprisingly some colleges have been sending students away, like Mutare Polytechnic. NUST is reported to be withholding students' results. Why is this happening?

Educators are disturbed by these double standards in the ministry and are asking the responsible authorities to charge and arrest the perpetrators of this heinous act since this is in clear violation of court orders as well as the rights to education of these youth.
