University
of Zimbabwe elects new leadership
Students Solidarity Trust
April 28, 2006
The University
of Zimbabwe has elected a new leadership, with elections for Presidency
having been held yesterday.
Tinei Mukwehwa,
a 2nd year Law student won with an overwhelming majority, having
gunnered more than 700 votes. The Vice President is one Kingstone,
while Abisha Dube anchored the Presidential race.
There seemed
to be a disturbing trend among political parties to influence the
outcome of the elections, with various parties and factions sponsoring
candidates for the elections. The union was divided along factional
lines of the MDC, with Mukwehwa campaigning on an anti-senate ticket
and Dube, campaigning on a pro-senate ticket.
The SST finds
this trend disturbing, because students should be left alone to
maintain their own autonomy, and be able to articulate the issues
affecting them with one voice, student activism should transcends
political affiliation, and we hope and pray that this divisive trend
will not encroach into ZINASU.
Elections for
the other posts will be held next week.
