Humana
People to People handed over Zvataida Early Childhood Development
centre to the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture in Shamva
district in Mashonaland Central province in Zimbabwe.
The handover
ceremony was on the 25th April 2006. It was marked by drama, music,
and speeches highlighting the importance of pre-school education
and the need for parents to support the education of their children.
Humana People
to People is in involved in the construction of 13 Early Childhood
Development centres, and training of teachers for the centres in
the rural communities in Shamva district. 2 centres are already
in operation whilst the other 11 are at different levels of construction.
Zvataida Early
Childhood Development centre has a building housing the classroom
with one office, a storeroom, a separate pit toilet, water tank
for children to wash their hands and playground. The centre is a
welcome to the people in Zvataida village. The headman expressed
happiness and said that the centre will not only benefit the children,
but will also be used a centre for community development programs,
a meeting point for village assemblies, night schools for the farmers
who can not read and write and a centre for youth development. Zvataida
Early Childhood Development centre is educating children from 0-6
years and these are graded according to their ages. This is giving
the parents more time working in the fields and at the same time
the children are learning necessary important skills for life.

The
Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture has attached the pre-school
to a sister primary school, Mashambanyama. The primary school will
oversee the educational activities at the centre.
Humana People
to People is training teachers for the Early Childhood Development
Centres in collaboration with the Ministry of Education in Zimbabwe
in Shamva district. The teachers are training in child development,
healthy and hygiene, teaching methods and practice for children,
and community mobilisation and development. The training is conducted
in a series of workshops covering 6 levels.
A member of
the Federation for Associations connected to the International Humana
People to People Movement in Zimbabwe is, Development Aid from People
to People, DAPP in Zimbabwe, which is running several social development
projects in the country.
