March 21, 2006
University authorities
at the National University of Science and Technology have suspended
28 students pending a hearing in the Vice Chancellors Board room
at NUST on the 28th of March.
The 28 include:
- Beloved Chiweshe
- SRC President,
- Mzwandile

- Iasac Chimutashu
- Former SRC President,
- Benjamin
Nyandoro - Former SRC President and
- Lawrence
Mashungu - National Vice Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Students
Christian Movement, among others.

above are charged with an assortment of charges, which include but
are not limited to:
- Conduct harmful
to the interests of the University, by demonizing and castigating
government and the Vice Chancellor of NUST
- Malicious
Injury to Property
While the remaining
24 are only charged with just the second charge. The students at
the National University of Science and Technology, have been in
perpetual protest at the college since the semester started, at
the massive fee increments by government which students have termed
"Operation Murambashasha", and have demonstrated at
least 4 times this semester, including on the 13th of February,
where 7 students were arrested, on the 15th of February where 24
were arrested, on the 20th of February where 8 were arrested, and
on the 14th of March where 10 students were arrested. The charges
leveled against them stem from the February 15 demonstrations.
Meanwhile following
expulsion 4 student leaders, SRC President H.Mavuma, SEC members
Collin Chibango, Mfundo Mlilo and Wellington Mahohoma, the University
of Zimbabwe has also suspended a former student leader and SST fellow,
Wellington Zindove on charges similar to the ones sighted for the
expulsion of the above 4. The Students Executive Council has however
resolved to fight the expulsions both legally and politically, and
have stated that they will not allow the unjustified expulsions
deter them performing duty and service to the Students Union.
