announces new school fees

GOVERNMENT yesterday
announced new tuition fees for primary and secondary schools, which
will see pupils paying between $100 000 and $500 000 per term.
Secretary for Education, Sport and Culture Dr Stephen Mahere said
the approved tuition fees for Zimbabwean pupils attending Government
Primary Schools in low-density urban areas was $200 000 up from
$225 while that for foreign pupils attending the same schools would
remain at US$300.
Pupils attending primary schools in high-density areas would pay
$100 000 up from $100 while foreign pupils would pay US$300.
Government Primary Schools in rural areas, said Dr Mahere, would
not be expected to pay any tuition fees while foreign pupils would
pay US$300.
Pupils attending Government Secondary Schools in low-density areas
would pay $500 000 up from $500 while foreigners would pay the old
fee of US$400.
Fees at Government Secondary Schools in high-density areas on the
other hand would pay $250 000 up from $250 while foreign pupils
would pay US$400.
Dr Mahere said Government Secondary Schools in rural areas would
charge $100 000 up from $100 while foreign pupils would be expected
to pay US$400.
The new fees come hard on the heels of an announcement of new examination
fees for this year.
Government recently pegged examination fees of $35 000 per subject
for Ordinary Level candidates with a subsidy of $25 000 and $95
000 per subject for Advanced Level with a $5 000 subsidy.
Grade Seven exams, said the Government would remain subsidised while
there would be no ZJC examinations this year.
