The Ambassador
of Sweden to Zimbabwe, Kristina Svensson, says her Embassy will
continue to strengthen community and individual efforts aimed at
empowering women and the girl child to deal with the far-reaching
effects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Svensson said the remarks when
she hosted a luncheon for women to mark the International Women's
Day (8th March). This year's commemoration coincided with the publication
of a book entitled "Secrets of a Woman's Soul" by Lutanga Shaba.
Proceeds from sales of the book will be channeled towards a scholarship
fund targeted at academically gifted young girls who find themselves
in situations of destitution because of the death of their parents
due to HIV and Aids. Commending the initiative by Shaba, Svensson
said the commemoration of the International Women's Day should not
only be a day for recollecting past achievements, but also a time
to remind womankind of their responsibilities to the girl child.
The Embassy of Sweden purchase 50 books as its contribution to the
revolving fund.
"The book carries
an important message on HIV/ Aids which it presents in an emotive
but clear language. It carries a message very few would brave to
tell, yet it also offers candid counsel to those working with people
living with HIV/AIDS", said Svensson.
Shaba appealed
to well-wishers to donate to the Fund.
"Grants and
donations can be forwarded to the Mama Milazi Scholarship Fund account,
details of which will be provided upon request by sending an e-mail
to swtrade@mweb.co.zw",
she said.
