ZCTU comments on the closure of private schools
Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
May 04, 2004

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) would like to express its disapproval of the government’s closure of 45 private schools for increasing school fees without its approval thereby affecting more than 30 000 children.

While the ZCTU condemns the exorbitant fees charged by these schools, there was no point for the Ministry of Education to punish students as a way of making a point and stamping its authority on the school authorities.

The decision by government to regulate and monitor the charging of school fees is appreciated but the refusal to allow these private schools to open on 4 May 2004 will greatly affect students, especially those who will be sitting for their examinations this year.

The ZCTU would like to urge the government to immediately open these schools and allow students to learn on last term’s fees while negotiations between the Ministry and the schools concerned are being made.

ZCTU Secretary General
