The
Majongwe Saga Continues
Crisis
Coalition
October
18, 2002
Raymond Majongwe,
the Secretary General of the Progressive Teachers was unlawfully
arrested on Wednesday the 16th of October 2002, at a school in the
Dzivaresekwa Township in Harare.
He was detained
along with the PTUZ treasurer and the national co-ordinator, both
of whom were released on the same day. The arresting details claimed
that Raymond had breached his bail conditions by addressing members
of his organisation at the Dzivaresekwa School. This charge was
both erroneous and unfounded. His bail conditions barred him from
visiting specific schools that did not include the school in question.
Raymond was
taken to court today after spending thirty-six hours in detention,
where he was once again severely tortured using electric shocks.
The Attorney General declined to prosecute Raymond, and instead
of releasing him, the police took him back for further detention.
This effectively means that Raymond is in danger of spending over
72 hours in detention for no apparent reason.
The behaviour
of the Zimbabwe Republic Police in this matter has been most shocking.
Not only have they under-mined their own Police Charter, but, their
conduct is patently unconstitutional and in flagrant violation of
International Conventions regarding the treatment of detained persons.
The Crisis in
Zimbabwe Coalition once again reiterates its denunciation of this
appalling act, and in particular the blatant disregard for basic
human freedoms to association, assembly and free expression.
Enough is
Enough! Zvakwana! Sokwanele!
