Zimbabwe started using ethanol blended with petrol Tuesday with motorists expressing skepticism on the new fuel, saying they are still opting for the old petrol, which is still available as they fear the latest blend may damage their vehicles.

The state-owned Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) reports that the government says Zimbabweans will be compelled to use the E-10 and E-85 fuel blend.

Experts have assured motorists it will not cause any damage to car models assembled after the 1990s.

A convertor will be installed in vehicles built before 1990 to make them compatible with the blended fuel, the experts said.

However, former Energy Minister Elton Mangoma of the Movement for Democratic Change formation of former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai warned against the use of the fuel, adding the government did not conduct adequate studies to ensure the fuel is safe for use in most vehicles.

Mister Mangoma tells VOA reporter Sithandekile Mhlanga the government had agreed on using E-5, and that use of E-10 and E-85 breached human rights as people were evicted from their areas to make way for a sub-contracted company to implement the project.
