Corruption: Residents' leader under fire

Gweru United Residents Association Chairman, Danny Munetsi, has been accused of unilaterally withdrawing a dossier put forward to the Local Government ministry. The document contained reports of corruption taking place at Gweru council.

In the dossier in possession of The Zimbabwean, the residents seek intervention by the local government ministry on reports that Deputy Mayor Taurai Demo and some councillors advertised commercial stands in the press and then grabbed the properties.

Government responded to the dossier by sending a probe team to Gweru council. The results of the investigating team are yet to be revealed. But Munetsi has since withdrawn the dossier raising ire of the residents.

"We were never consulted on the issue of withdrawing the dossier. No explanations have also been made to that regard and all is not happy," said a member of GURA who asked not to be named.

"We still believe in the truth that is contained in the dossier and we want it restored," another member of the association said.

There are suspicions that Munetsi might have been forced by the councillors to withdraw the document. Contacted for comment, Munetsi confirmed that he had withdrawn the dossier but denied any improper influence on his action.

"The withdrawal of the issues with GCC was amicably reached and we agreed to learn to manage our conflict as a community. The Conflict Management and Resolution process is ongoing and a lot of the dust is settling," he said.
