African Union
(AU) Commissioner for political affairs Aïsha Abdullahi says
Zimbabwe is an important member of the AU hence the huge interest
in the
country’s general elections next Wednesday.
Abdullahi said
this soon after touching down at the Harare International Airport
on Tuesday this afternoon.
High-level AU
teams have started arriving in Zimbabwe ahead of the elections with
the chairperson of the AU Commission Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma expected
to jet in tomorrow followed by former Nigerian president Olusegun
Obasanjo, who is heading the AU observer mission, on Thursday.
Abdullahi said
the AU is committed to ensuring democratic stability through credible
elections on the continent as contained in the African Charter on
Democracy, Elections and Governance, the African Union Declaration
on the Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa and the
AU Guidelines on Election Observation and Monitoring Missions.
She confirmed
receiving reports from AU observers who have been stationed in the
country since June 15 but would not be drawn into revealing what
is contained in them.
“Yes we
have received the reports but we will only be discussing the issues
in a briefing on Thursday,” Abdullahi said.
Following the
approval of the deployment of an AU election observation mission
Dlamini-Zuma, the AU long-term observers arrived in Zimbabwe on
June 15 and were subsequently joined by 60 short-term observers
on July 20.
