ZimRights officials acquitted
Crisis
in Zimbabwe Coalition
June 21, 2013
Two Zimbabwe
Human Rights Association (ZimRights) officials and the organisation
in its own capacity today, Friday June 21, were acquitted from criminal
charges at the Harare Magistrates court before Magistrate Donald
Ndirowei.
The allegation
of conspiracy to commit fraud, or publish or communication falsehoods
prejudicial to the state were leveled after the main office of the
organisation was raided
in December 2012 in Harare.
The acquitted are ZimRights
Director and Education Programs Officer Leo Chamahwinya who were
being represented by Beatrice Mtetwa and Trust Maanda respectively.
Meanwhile, the trial
of Highfields Local Chapter chairperson, Dorcas Shereni, continues
before the same court.
Analyst had vied the
court case as targeted persecution against the organisation and
its employees cloaked in the pretext of legal prosecution after
the accused spent stints in prison amid a countrywide wave of raids
and arrests of civil rights activists which began in August 2012.
