CCDZ programme officers released on bail, police preferring further
charges against organization
Centre
for Community Development in Zimbabwe (CCDZ)
February 20, 2013
The Centre for
Community Development In Zimbabwe (CCDZ) Programme Officer, George
Makoni and local community organizer Gift Konjani who were arrested
on Friday the 15th of February at the Church of Christ in Chegutu
and detained at Kadoma Central Police Station over the weekend were
released on bail and will appear in court on the 6th March 2013.
CCDZ is facing charges of contravening the draconian Public
Order and Security Act (POSA) Section 24 after holding a civic
education
meeting on the new Constitution and urging Chegutu residents
to prepare for the harmonized elections expected later this year.
Subsequent to
Makoni's release, the police in Kadoma yesterday indicated an intention
to prefer further charges against CCDZ for what they called "operating
illegally" in terms of the Private
Voluntary Act; despite being registered as a Trust. CCDZ nominated
its Chairperson Mr Earnest Mudzengi to represent the organization
in the legal proceedings pertaining to the fresh charges. The matter
is being handled by Mr Chris Mhike of the Zimbabwe
Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR).
We would like
to express our gratitude to our members and civil society partners
for their continued support and solidarity.
