Parliament should probe indigenisation deals
Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai
February 18, 2013

There have been disturbing reports of alleged misdemeanours and corruption in the handling of empowerment transactions for several companies.

As Prime Minister, I am concerned about the possibility of a few individuals benefitting from a programme purportedly meant for the majority of the Zimbabweans.

I am equally concerned with reports that some relevant Government organs were kept in the dark about the full nature of some of these transactions.

Only a proper investigation will expose the truth about what happened and whether or not the State and the people of Zimbabwe were prejudiced in any way and whether all procedures and statutes were followed.

It is therefore imperative and in the interest of transparency that Parliament through its relevant committees should probe this matter.

A good number of Zimbabweans have for some time been questioning the sincerity of this programme as a broad-based empowerment programme designed to benefit the majority.

The public perception is that this is a programme meant to benefit a few connected elites.

In this regard, I have no doubt in my mind that no well-meaning member of this Government would stand in the way of a Parliamentary probe into this matter.

We owe the truth to the people of Zimbabwe.

Our natural resources are a national heritage and should be shared equitably by all Zimbabweans regardless of their station in life.
