Youth group starts discussion series on careers
US
Embassy
January 30, 2013
The youth online
website DefZee will begin a series of monthly discussion sessions
aimed at bridging the gap between various sectors of industry and
young people. The "DefZee Presents: Your Career" series
will feature professionals from various fields, along with students
studying towards the respective career paths. Every fourth week
of the month, DefZee will hold a session profiling an industry and
the numerous career choices available in the chosen field.
The first discussion
session "I'm Gonna Be a Big Dhara Banker" will be held
on Thursday (January 31st) at 3 pm at the U.S. Embassy's Eastgate
offices in Harare. The guest speakers Ishmael Chibvunye, a banker
with TN Bank and Memory Nguwi - an industrial psychology consultant.
Entrance is free to interested members of the public.
"The idea
is to give young people in schools a clearer understanding of different
jobs out there as a way to help them decide on what careers to follow,"
says Fungai Tichawangana, Chief Imagineer at Aripano Infinity, the
organization that established DefZee. "When I was in high
school we had no career guidance and a lot of us found ourselves
in jobs we hated, and shockingly, even today many young people still
have no guidance for that big decision."
Food for Thought
sessions are held every Tuesday afternoon at the U.S. Embassy Public
Affairs Section Auditorium and allow Zimbabwean and American speakers
to discuss various issues with members of the public. DefZee was
a regular feature of the sessions hosting monthly discussion sessions
targeted at youth throughout 2012.
"We're
happy to collaborate with DefZee on this series which should be
of great interest to young people in Zimbabwe. Through our EducationUSA
program and other outreach platforms, we aim to provide greater
access to information to youth so they can make informed choices
about their futures," says Jillian Bonnardeaux, Acting Public
Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy.
DefZee will
film the discussion sessions and share footage in other parts of
the country as well as online to benefit a bigger number of students.
The youth outfit has lined up potential topics to be covered throughout
the year with students interested in hearing more about what lawyers,
medicine, scientists and politicians scheduled for February, March,
April and May respectively.
