Coalition honored for human rights work
Crisis
in Zimbabwe Coalition Regional Office (SA)
December 04, 2012
The Crisis in
Zimbabwe Coalition was on Thursday 29 December awarded the 2012
Human Rights Roll of Honor Award by the National
Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (NANGO). The award
is given annually in recognition of outstanding work in the protection
and promotion of Human Rights by a Zimbabwean organization. The
award also honors dedication and sacrifice in the pursuit of human
rights, and an evidenced unwavering commitment to fostering a culture
of human rights in the country.
NANGO Chairperson, Effie
Ncube said the award recognises the critical role played by Crisis
in Zimbabwe Coalition since its formation in 2001 in investigating
reports of human rights violations in and around Zimbabwe, exposing
them, as well as keeping Zimbabwe on the agenda locally, regionally
and internationally through advocacy work on the human rights and
governance situation in the country.
"We recognize the
work being spearheaded by Crisis Coalition in keeping the vision
of a democratic and better Zimbabwe intact at the national, regional
and international level. And take time to salute the unwavering
commitment of the Coalition in this pursuit. It is a well deserved
honor, which has been long in coming but always sure to arrive",
Said the NANGO Chairperson.
Mr Thabani Nyoni the
Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition Spokesperson in response to the honor
said: "We are very much humbled by the recognition of our
efforts by our partners in civil society. We are inspired by the
award and we will continue promoting human rights, democracy and
good governance in Zimbabwe. The award is testament to the fact
that our work is not off the mark, that it is not only useful but
appreciated, and this only serves to allow us to double our efforts
in the pursuit of a democratic Zimbabwe where the rights of people
are respected and protected."
In statement from the
Coalition Executive, signed by the Chairperson of Crisis Coalition
Mr. Okay Machisa, tribute was paid to past leaders of the Coalition,
who he said "lit the way and set the standard with regards
to the Coalitions work and shepherded the organisation to where
it is". Mr. Machisa also thanked the Coalitions membership
and staff team whose "Industry and sacrifices under difficult
circumstances" he said had earned the honor.
2012 is the
3rd year that the Apex organisation has presented the award. On
the two previous occasions the award has been handed to the illustrious
Zimbabwe Lawyers
for Human Rights (ZLHR), for their Human Rights defense work.
This Human Rights Award,
is the first honor that the Coalition has received as an Organisation
since inception, although different leaders and members have been
presented before with local and international accolades for their
contributions to the struggle for Human Rights and Democracy in
Zimbabwe.
