  • COPAC excludes civil society from the 2nd All Stakeholders' Conference
Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (SA Regional Office)
    September 21, 2012

From our engagement it has now emerged that the three main political parties in the GPA have decided to exclude civil society from the 2nd all stakeholders Conference. 2000 delegates are expected to participate at the 2nd All Stakeholders' Conference. According to the current arrangement each political party in the inclusive government will second 600 delegates while the remaining 200 will be reserved for Members of Parliament.

We are concerned that the three main political parties have once again decided to make this important process, a political parties event while excluding the voice of the people. In our initial engagement with political parties, it had been agreed that civil society would second 70% of delegates to the 2nd All Stakeholders' Conference with political parties occupying the remainder.

We feel that the new arrangement is a negation of the initial agreement which will deprive the majority of Zimbabweans an opportunity to actively and effectively participate at the 2nd All Stakeholders Conference. We are convinced that the 2nd All Stakeholders' Conference is a space for ordinary people and hence must not be hijacked by political players who have been active in the constitution making process for the past three and half years.

We want to assure you that we will continue to engage the political parties in order to find a lasting solution to this new turn of events. We will keep you posted on any developments.
