Political environment in Zimbabwe update - Week ending 31 August 2012

Tense A case of harassment and intimidation has been reported in Zaka. Former ZANU PF Chairman for Zaka East, Mr. Zekia Musengi is allegedly being accused of forcefully taking over a farm in Chiredzi North constituency which belongs to one Mrs Nelityi Sithole an MDC supporter. Mr. Musengi has been threatening the victim for the past four months for supporting the MDC. Last month he gave her a one month ultimatum to surrender her MDC card and support ZANU PF if she wants to keep her farm a move which she refused. After the expiry of the ultimatum on 24 August, Mr. Musengi forcefully took over the farm and gave it to his friend one Solomon Makusha.

Mrs Sithole was forced to leave everything behind including her unfinished house which she was building. It is still unknown on whose capacity was Mr. Musengi acting on when she evicted the victim. Mrs Sithole has since reported the case to the police who promised to investigate the case.

Tense It is reported that Mr. Antony Zvinavanhu an MDC supporter who lives under headman Tapera was heavily assaulted by ZANU PF youth, Harrison, Prosper Tapera and Unganai Makani on 22 August. The victim was assaulted for mobilizing villagers to attend an MDC meeting in the area. The three are alleged to have attacked Mr. Zvinavanhu using a spear and he suffered a broken leg. A police case was made and the trio were arrested. On 24 August the perpetrators appeared before the court but to the surprise of many both the medical report and the docket had disappeared forcing the Magistrate to drop the case. The reasons for the disappearance of the crucial information are still unclear but villagers are suspecting foul play from ZANU officials in Zaka. The perpetrators have been harassing the victim since their release accusing him of spearheading their arrest.

Tense The situation is tense in Redcliff as Mudah Mugabe a ZANU PF official is still intimidating and harassing MDC youths denying them access to gold panning simple because they refused to buy ZANU PF party cards. The MDC youth have called for the intervention of JOMIC to stop this bully behavior by Mudah Mugabe.

Buhera South
Moderate Cases of unfair distribution of food are still haunting Buhera South especially in Mutiusinazita. It is reported that Mr. Joseph Chinotimba frequents the distribution depot demanding that the food be given to ZANU PF supporters only. Mr. Chinotimba contested the Member of Parliament seat in Buhera South in 2008 which he lost to an MDC official. When Heal Zimbabwe contacted Mr. Chinotimba he refuted the claims stating that he has not been in Buhera for a long time but the communities are adamant that he is negatively influencing the food distribution process using it as a campaigning platform.

Tense There are reported cases of harassment and intimidation in Gutu. It is alleged that ZANU PF youth have already started campaigning for a NO Vote in the upcoming referendum. The youth are said to be intimidating villagers threatening them with death if ever they consider taking the MDC position in the constitutional referendum.

Calm No cases of political violence have been reported lately. The calm environment is being attributed to the dissolvement of the ZANU PF District Coordinating Committees which they allege have been responsible for influencing people to commit violent acts.
Midlands
Gokwe
Moderate It is reported that MDC supporters were assaulted by ZANU youth for wearing party t-shirts during a cleanup campaign organized by JOMIC last week. The cleanup campaign was organized by JOMIC to bring together people from various political parties in a niche to promote a culture of tolerance between political parties ahead of elections.
