Bulawayo Agenda

Plumtree residents
said their hope lies in the Devolution of power for them to benefit
from their local resources in the area.
Speaking at
a local resource management meeting organised by Plumtree Agenda,
residents called for Devolution of power that will create employment
opportunities for them as currently companies employ what the residents
termed 'outsiders'.
The participants
expressed pointed out government offices, civil service and Non-Governmental
Organisations as the major culprits in denying them job opportunities
as these 'bring their own' people.
Although Plumtree
border post is one of the income generating entry points, benefits
said they were not benefiting from it due to the centralized system
of governance that lacks transparency and fair distribution of resources.
As a result,
Devolution of power will enhance local development through fiscal
devolution, resource allocation and management said the participants.
There was also
a unanimous call for the government to consider Kalanga language
in the education curriculum so that it is taught in the local schools
for the respect and preservation of the Kalanga customs and beliefs.
Addressing the
participants, Bulawayo Agenda Director Thabani Nyoni urged the community
to continue advocating for a proper and clear devolution of power
in the new constitution.
The meeting
was widely dominated by women with participants calling for regular
updates on national processes such as the constitution
making process.
