Peace in my village: Day of the African Child commemorations in Zaka
Heal Zimbabwe Trust
June 19, 2012

Youth from various political parties in Zaka thronged Jerera Growth Point on Sunday 17 June 2012 to attend the Day of the African Child commemoration concert hosted by Heal Zimbabwe at the open area close to N. Richards. The commemorations were held under the theme "Peace In My Village". Close to one thousand people mainly youths attended the event.

Part of the artists who provided edutainment included Uncle Jahunda, Magesh dance group, Amigos dance group, and many other local artists who coined their performances around the need to maintain peace and stability in Zaka. Dzimbahwe poetry group from Zaka also entertained the people with their poem "Ukaera wairaira hauirege" which emphasized the need to promote and uphold peace among Zimbabweans regardless of political affiliation.

Four teams comprising of youth from both MDC and ZANU PF also took part in the battle for the June 16 Peace in My Village Challenge Cup. All the participating teams got soccer kits from Heal Zimbabwe that had the theme of the day written on them. The youth were grateful for the platform as it taught them to be tolerant of each other's political views and they pledged to uphold peace in the area through a pledge for peace raffle draw.

The youth present also formed peace clubs and promised to continue meeting and coming up with peace building activities in a niche to avoid the circumstances surrounding the 2008 election violence in Zaka. These clubs will enable Heal Zimbabwe to make follow up peace building activities where the youth will be encouraged to desist from being used by politicians to instigate political violence in the area.
