Weekly update on the political environment in Zimbabwe
Heal Zimbabwe Trust
January 23, 2012

Province and District The General Environment General Political Atmosphere
Mashonaland Central - Mt Darwin East Moderate The area has had some relative stability and calmness in the beginning of 2012 and the presence of the dreaded members of the Central Intelligence Organization who usually spent time at local shops has decreased. However in mid December last year following the Zanu PF conference in Bulawayo, delegates from the conference came back threatening people that elections would be held in March 2012 and therefore all MDC supporters should leave the area before the 1st of March 2012.
Mashonaland Central -Muzarabani Calm The environment is generally quite as political activities in most areas have been on the hold as people are concentrating more on their field work.
Masvingo - Zaka Tense Zanu PF activists in the area on 18 January barred members of the MDC Zaka West Executive from holding their regular meetings. It is alleged that Esther Bonzo of Manhope village, Faustino Murambatsvina of Mhute village and Joseph Chimunda of Mutsava village, all from ward 17 in Chief Nyakunhuwa's area are at the forefront of threatening activists from other political parties with unspecified action come election time. The suspected ZANU PF activists claim that they want to get rid of "puppets" and "sell-outs" in Zaka and return all the parliamentarian and council seats which MDC currently occupy. The three are reportedly going around compiling lists of people that attend MDC meetings and gatherings and their latest spat with local villagers was last week where they recorded the names of people going to Charingeno shops to attend a District executive meeting.

Heal Zimbabwe urged the affected people to lodge a complaint with the police and has given the police one week to bring the hooligans to book.

Midlands - Gokwe Calm The area is relatively quiet and no cases of violence have recorded this year.
Manicaland - Buhera Calm No cases of political violence or threats recorded so far.
Masvingo - Gutu Calm No cases of violence and intimidation recorded as yet.
Mashonaland East - Mutoko Calm The area is relatively calm as people are busy weeding their fields and no cases of harassment have been reported during and after the festive season.
Bulawayo Tense There were reports of harassment and arrests of about 50 MDC youth on 14 January 2012 who had gathered to protest against the continued incarceration of their leader Solomon Madzore. They were later released after about seven hours.

Police intolerance has been on the rise as witnessed by the detention and torture of WOZA activists in Bulawayo on 19 January 2012 after a protest march.
