COTRAD joins the world in commemorating World Aids Day
Community Tolerance Reconciliation and Development (COTRAD)

December 02, 2011

COTRAD joins the world in commemorating World Aids Day which marked its inception on 1st December 1988. COTRAD is therefore agitating for an increase in awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education in a bid to curtail the pandemic. Today as people across the globe commemorate this day it should also be important in reminding the youths that HIV has not gone away and that there is need for collective conscience.

Statistics from UNAIDS have shown that there are 34 million people living with HIV in the world with the possibility of the number escalating to alarming levels if no mechanisms are put in place to combat the pandemic. COTRAD therefore bemoans that young people because of the economic malaise and the social impoverishment are much more vulnerable especially in developing countries like Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwean government has made some progress so far and is proof that we can realize our vision of Zero new HIV infections, Zero discrimination and Zero AIDS related death. However it is critical for the government to find real alternatives and create employment for the youth to fight against the spread of HIV and AIDS. The policies of indeginization must be transparent, clear and serving all minority and vulnerable groups including the youth.

COTRAD joins the worlds with conviction, achievements have been made and people in the world are now able to stand up and say with conviction the end of AIDS is in the sight.

In spite of economic down turn that has stretched the AIDS response to its limits millions of lives have been saved as HIV treatment and prevention efforts continue to show results. In Zimbabwe most of the youth are affected but we are urging the government to prioritize the health sector in the 2012 budget.
