Crisis
in Zimbabwe Coalition
November 16, 2011
Two Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition program officers, Beloved Chiweshe
and Maureen Gombakomba and representative from Zimbabwe Organisation
for Youth in Politics (ZOYP) were today, 16 November 2011 arrested
while convening a civil society coordinating committee meeting at
the Kwekwe Theatre in Kwekwe. Charges proffered against them are
yet to be established.
According to
reports received by the Coalition, Chiweshe and Gombakomba, who
were discussing the progress of the constitutional
reform process with more than 90 CSO representatives, were arrested
under the nefarious Public
Order and Security Act (POSA) by 7 police officers and 2 members
of the dreaded Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) led by Detective
Mahlangu. They are currently being held at Kwekwe Central Police
Station. The Zimbabwe
Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) have since deployed Reginald
Chidavanyika, a Kwekwe based human rights lawyer.
'The Coalition
is concerned with the increased persecution and intimidation of
civic players by the state and the apparent shrinkage of democratic
space. We demand the immediate release of the trio and resect of
citizens' freedoms of association and expression particularly
as the country as the country moves towards finalising the constitution
making process and possible elections,' said The Coalition's
spokesperson, Mr. Thabani Nyoni in response to the arrests.
