  • CiCZ congratulates Maguwu
    Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition
    November 10, 2011

The Crisis in Zimbabwe Coaltion wishes to congratulate Mr. Farai Maguwu the Director of the Center for Research and Development Zimbabwe for being honored with the prestigious Alison Des Forges Award for Extraordinary Activism.

The award beckons human rights defender to stand tall and refuse to be intimidated and harrased as these are tactics to remove them from the focus of their objectives. Farai Maguwu's tremendous courage in exposing abuses in Zimbabwe's diamond fields and demanding transparency and accountability in the extraction of these precious stones, helped generate international attention to the serious human rights violations that were taking place in Zimbabwe and forced the government towards complying with the Kimberly Process Certification scheme.

There is no doubt in the minds of many Zimbabweans that even the few steps that have been taken to ensure that smuggling is halted, transparency is foisted and that violations of human rights are reduced in the extraction and sale of diamonds in Zimbabwe, by the state are as a result of Farai's sterling and brave work.

Farai, who the Crisis in Zimbabwe awarded with the Human Rights and Democracy Individual Award for 2009, is well worthy of the recognition that Human Rights Watch has given him.

As we celebrate the valor of Farai Maguwu and celebrate his honor, we are certain that the award will help in continuing to flush a sharp light on the Marange diamond fields, and that it will aid all well meaning Zimbabweans to continue to increase calls to the government extract and sell diamonds within the confines of international standards as enshrined in the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme.

Continuing his calls for the demilitarization of the diamond fields, and ensuring that diamond revenue benefits all in Zimbabwe not just the new diamond oligarchs, best honors Farai's honor.
