CiZC convenes meeting in Karoi
Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition

The Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition convened a community meeting at Christ Church Town in Karoi, Mashonaland West Province on 15 September 2011 which was attended by 84 people (45 men and 39 females). The purpose of the meeting was to encourage the people to register as voters and discuss amendments to the gazzeted Electoral Amendment Bill. The meeting also gave feedback on the progress of the constitution making process. The meeting took place at a time when the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Justice is scheduled to hold public hearings in selected areas of the country to gather views of the citizens on the gazzetted bill.

The Coalition was encourage by the by-partisan attendance at the meeting where the local leadership of both ZANU PF and the MDC and their supporters took part in the discussions in a peaceful and co-existent manner.

The following issues emerged from the meeting:

  • Police should carry out their duties without interference from politicians
  • ZEC should be independent and work without political interference
  • The case of Moses Chokuda who was murdered in Gokwe and is yet to be buried should serve as a lesson for would be perpetrators of political violence
  • The police should not detain people who report cases of political violence.
  • A new voter's roll should be put in place
  • International observers and monitors should be allowed to monitor elections
  • The voting of civil servants participating in election administration should be transparent and should be monitored by all political parties
  • Secrecy of the ballot for security forces should be guaranteed. They should be allowed to vote freely without undue influence and supervision.
  • ZEC should be staffed with competent people, appointed on the basis of their expertise and working independently without political interference
  • All political parties should be given equal access to state media for campaigning purposes during election time.
