Bulawayo Agenda
September 15, 2011
Tsholotsho
- Last weekend, 10 September 2011, Bulawayo Agenda held a constitutional
awareness soccer tournament in Tsholotsho Mvundlana area despite
the police refusing to clear the activity. The tournament was successfully
held after the community demanded that the tournament proceed without
police clearance as it would contribute towards community development.
Four teams, namely: Amakhosi, Mhlahlo, Simanje and Dinyane Football
Clubs competed against each other in the tournament.
Bulawayo Agenda
shall continue with its advocacy against repressive laws like POSA
and AIPPA
which have been used to rob citizen of their rights to access to
information and freedom of assembly. Members of Parliament
have been engaged to push for the repealing of the draconian laws.
Gwanda
- Gwanda Agenda held a consultative meeting on the proposed
Human Rights
Commission Bill. CSO leaders, business people and political
party leaders were invited to the meeting. The main objective of
the meeting were to assess the content of the Bill so that the leadership
in Gwanda could be able to critique and explain the Bill to their
constituencies. The Gwanda community as has been the norm has always
been left out of major discussions and this meeting was an opportunity
for them to input into the debate of the Human Rights Bill. Gwanda
leaders said they welcomed the formation of the Commission however
stressed that 8 commissioners were not quite representative of the
Zimbabwean community. The least that could have been done could
have been to have a commissioner from each province of the country.
There was also need for consideration of representation of groups
like the disabled, the church, traditional leaders and many other
groups.
