US
Embassy
August 30, 2011
New USAID Zimbabwe
Mission Director, Ms. Melissa Williams, met with Ambassador Simon
Khaya Moyo, National Chairman of ZANU-PF, at ZANU-PF Headquarters
today as a follow up to Ambassador Charles A. Ray's meeting
with the Chairman on August 25. During the meeting, Director Williams
noted USAID's programmatic support for development in Zimbabwe
as part of U.S. Embassy efforts to build partnerships and development
achievements between the United States and the people of Zimbabwe.
She provided details about USAID's support to improving the
health of Zimbabweans, especially in fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS,
and noted USAID's intention to launch an anti-malaria program
this year. Ms. Williams further discussed ongoing USAID programs
to build self-sustaining agricultural systems, as well as previous
humanitarian assistance. She expressed optimism at the decrease
in the number of vulnerable people likely to need food aid this
year.
Echoing Ambassador Ray's
message, Director Williams stated that USAID is committed to cooperating
on a broad array of areas in which the U.S. and Zimbabwe share common
interests, including in the areas of promoting national stability
and economic growth. Chairman Moyo and Director Williams noted the
need to work together for the people of Zimbabwe.
The United States government
is the largest single donor of humanitarian assistance in Zimbabwe.
Since 2002, the United States has contributed more than $1 billion
to humanitarian operations in Zimbabwe.
