Bulawayo Agenda

Bulawayo

US Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Charles Ray addressed 75 participants comprising of captains of industry, MP's, CSO leaders, journalists and academics, at a Bulawayo Agenda policy dialogue meeting held at the Bulawayo Club on Monday evening (22 August 2011). Bulawayo Agenda had organised this meeting to specifically discuss the Future United States-Zimbabwe Relations, particularly in relation to diplomatic engagement and cooperation. In his speech, Ambassador Charles Ray described the relationship between Zimbabwe and the U.S. as dysfunctional, stating that both parties need to work together to repair the relationship. He said that while the people-to-people relationship between the two countries had survived, the two countries need to work on the government-government relationship.

Participants raised questions relating to the controversial issues of sanctions particularly on Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (ZIDERA). Concerning the possibility of another bloody, uncontested election the Ambassador said he would not be impressed to see the will of the people not followed. He emphasized the U.S.'s neutrality in Zimbabwean politics and their desire to see a non-violent and credible election.

Lupane

4 teams (COPA FC, Lupane Celtics, GMB FC and Lupane Stars) participated in the football festival organised by Bulawayo Agenda (through its chapter Lupane Agenda) at Somhlolo Stadium in Lupane on Sunday the 21st of August 2011. The festival was held after Bulawayo Agenda realised that there were low levels of participation from young people during the COPAC Constitutional Reform outreach programme. This tournament, which attracted over 200 spectators was held to update the young people on the progress of the constitution making process, encouraging them to participate in the process. Addressing the youths before the tournament, Bulawayo Agenda Director, Thabani Nyoni said that the organisation will begin to focus on sports as an avenue for educating young people to encourage them to participate in national processes. GMB FC won the tournament after showing sublime skills to dispatch Lupane Celtic 3-0 in the final.
