NCA
on road accidents
National Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
August
03, 2011
The National
Constitutional Assembly (NCA) is gravely concerned about the increasing
carnage on our roads as we are approaching the Heroes holidays.
In the past
week we have lost more than 20 lives through road accidents.
As the NCA we
demand that there be measures that will end the carnage on our roads
by punishing offenders and ending the culture of impunity.
An urgent crack
down on speeding and the use of unroadworthy vehicles must be done.
There is also need to streamline the collection of fines with the
aim of reducing the number of accidents.
However we also
place the blame on the police who are leaving traffic offenders
to pass through roadblocks after taking bribes, and this culture
should stop. Our message to them is that human life is a gift from
God and cannot be exchanged for silver or gold.
We also take
this opportunity to register our disappointment in the state of
our roads which are infested with potholes and these have also contributed
to the cause of accidents. We urge government to improve the state
of our roads as part of their responsibility to protect human life.
We extend our
condolences and deepest sympathy to the families of the deceased
on the tragic loss of their loved ones. We are in mourning with
them at this darkest hour that has befallen them.
We urge motorists
to drive carefully during this heroes holiday.
