Political crisis in Malawi reaching its tipping point

"... smoke was billowing into the sky as protesters burnt cars, office and shops belonging to minister and politicians from Mutharika's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)".

Riots have broken out in several cities in Malawi after police and the army tried to disperse protesters demanding the resignation of President Bingu wa Mutharika, accused of violating liberties and damaging the economy. Opposition and civil society groups in Malawi vowed to continue with their plans for marches in four cities to express discontent at maladministration and violations of the constitution by Mutharika's governement.

Just like Zimbabwe, Malawi is yearning for basic civil freedoms, free and fair elections, justice and peace. President wa Mutharika is banking on armed forces who have been deployed onto the streets of Malawi to quell anti-government demonstrations that have already claimed the lives of at least eighteen people. He ought to realize that no matter how brutal a system is, it is inevitably defeated.

SADC and the AU should take urgent measures to stop the Malawian government from committing human rights violations.
