Civil society reaffirms solidarity for political detainees
Crisis
in Zimbabwe Coalition
July 09, 2011
Yesterday, 08
July 2011 representatives from different civil society organizations
including Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition, Heal
Zimbabwe, ZimRights,
and Zimbabwe Young Women's Network for Peacebuilding (ZYWNP)
paid a solidarity visit to the political detainees accused of murdering
a police officer in Glen View who are currently at Chikurubi
Maximum Prison.
The detainees
have now spent 39 days in detention following their arrest
on the 29th of May 2011. Last week on Friday the 1st of July 2011
Justice Uchena granted
bail to 12 of the detainees and denied the other including Cynthia
Manjoro, Yvonne Musarurwa, Rebecca Mafukeni, and Lazarus Maengahama
bail despite the fact that they were nowhere near the scene of the
crime.
The political detainees told court that they were
assaulted and tortured by the police while in custody. The failure
of the High Court to put pressure on the Attorney General's
office to investigate and condemn these blatant violations of human
rights goes against the principle of equality before the law.
Please express your solidarity with the detainees
by sending letters to the prison officials demanding an end to the
violation of the rights of the detainees at the following address:
Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison
Chikurubi Prison Complex
Private Bag 7392 Greendale,
Harare,
Zimbabwe
