Detention Diary
Crisis
in Zimbabwe Coalition
June 29, 2011
The police have
continued with arresting more people in connection with the death
of a police officer in Glen View. Investigations have established
that 19 of these people were nowhere near he scene, but those 19
remain in custody. Now it turns out that more people, presumably
MDC members are being arrested for the same case. On Monday Tendai
Chinyama, the MDC-T's Kambuzuma district organizing secretary
was also remanded in custody over the alleged murder. Meanwhile
the rest of the accused being held over the death are still waiting
for the court to make a ruling on their bail application which is
expected tomorrow at 1400hrs at the High Court.
Police have
also arrested The Standard newspaper Editor Nevanji Madanhire together
with reporter Patience Nyangove on a recent story on the arrest
of Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Jameson
Timba, which Nyangove wrote last week. Mr Timba had been arrested
for allegedly calling President Mugabe a liar, was released on Sunday
after High Court judge ruled that his detention was illegal. Ms
Nyangove together with Editor Nevanji Madanhire are currently detained
at Harare Central police station where they are being charged with
criminal defamation although it is unclear where the charges are
emanating from.
In another case
High Court Judge Justice Bhunu yesterday acquitted
Minster of Energy and Power Development Elton Mangoma who had been
on trail for allegedly flouting tender procedures in the procurement
of fuel. In his ruling Justice Bhunu ruled that the Attorney General's
Office failed to gather factual evidence case against Hon. Mangoma.
In his defence, Minister Mangoma said his arrest was an attempt
to scuttle the criminal prosecution of senior executives at the
State-run fuel procurement company, the National Oil Company of
Zimbabwe which he had already initiated with the Attorney General'
Office. Hon. Mangoma said his arrest and detention was meant to
afford the perpetrators of fraud at Noczim free reign to destroy
the available evidence. Hon. Mangoma's yet again awaits trial
of allegedly contravening Section 174 (1) (a) and Section 174 (2)
of the Criminal
Law Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23 on the 18th of
July 2011. The State alleges that Hon. Mangoma unlawfully and intentionally
abused his public office by failing to follow proper tender allocation
procedures.
Meanwhile police
yesterday summoned
seven Women of
Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) members to stand trial tomorrow on Wednesday
29 June 2011 at the Harare Magistrate Courts for allegedly causing
a nuisance in a public place by participating in an unsanctioned
demonstration. The members are Vonai Maphosa, Zhuama Njoya, Portia
Masawi, Gladys Kausiwa, Felistas Mateveke, Fiona Mazivanhanga and
Annastambia Phiri. We strongly urge the Zimbabwean government particularly
the security sector, to create a safe environment that ensures political
tolerance.
