14 more days of torture
Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition
June 03, 2011

14 more days of torture as the Attorney General's office through Prosecutor, Mr Nyazamba has requested the court to remand the case of the 24 Glenview residents charged with committing murder arguing for the need for further investigations. This means that the accused will spend another 2 weeks in custody as Magistrate Kubomera remanded them until the 17th of June 2011.

Magistrate Kubomera however, granted an order that the activists be given medical attention by government doctors. The order followed the residents' lawyers Mr. Charles Kwaramba's appeal for special medical attention for his clients who were subjected to torture during the incarceration period. Kwaramba noted that his clients are being denied food and are in pain as a result of beatings with button sticks, and booted feet by police. The lawyer told the court that conditions in remand prison are life threatening for his clients considering the fact that some of his clients might have suffered internal injuries due to the torture they are experiencing. Furthermore, Kwaramba ordered a commission of inquiry into the illegalities and unlawful conduct of the police as they exceeded their mandate and took the law into their own hands.
