SADC Troika deserves applause
Crisis
in Zimbabwe Coalition
April 02, 2011
The current
volatile political environment in Zimbabwe is a cause for concern
as evidenced by the increased arrests, cancellations of opposition
rallies, as well as the harassment of rights activists and opposition
leaders and supporters. SADC should undoubtedly be able to help
bring about solutions where government or electoral disputes arise.
Indeed there must be an immediate end to violence, intimidation,
hate speech, harassment, and any other form of action that contradicts
the letter and spirit of Global
Political Agreement. For this and more, the Coalition applauds
the SADC Troika
attending to the Zimbabwe situation and for taking steps that push
for an environment conducive to holding free and fair elections
as part of solutions to the decade long crisis.
The power-sharing deal
between ZANU-PF and the MDC formations, known as the Global Political
Agreement (GPA) is on the brink of faltering. President Mugabe,
ZANU-PF and security actions of thwarting the reform processes agreed
upon in the GPA testify it all. It is thus a positive development
for SADC to share the same sentiments with us by observing the violations
and delay in the implementation of the Agreement. This is indeed
a big step for the SADC Troika and the very strongly worded Communiqué
at the end of the summit is very much commendable. The Coalition
only hopes that the Southern and Northern African tyrants will soon
observe that the Troika's backing of Allassane Ouattara of
the Ivory Coast serves as a wakeup call to them and soon realize
that a stitch in time saves nine and democracy shall indeed prevail.
