We
are not a political party - Dr Madhuku
National Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
February
07, 2011
National Constitutional
Assembly (NCA) National Chairperson Dr Lovemore Madhuku has dismissed
reports that the NCA is transforming to become a political party.
Speaking at a Take Charge Campaign grassroots meeting held on Saturday
5 February 2011 in Kachuta District, Guruve North in Mashonaland
Central province, the constitutional law expert said the NCA was
not a political party and it does not intend to become one.
''We are
not a political party and you will never hear us registering candidates
in any national election. We are a movement whose main goal is to
fight for a new people driven constitution," said Dr Madhuku.
He said that those in political offices should govern properly so
that the nation prospers.
The NCA leader took
time to educate villagers about constitutionalism urging them to
register as voters so that they will participate in the referendum
whenever it's going to be conducted.
Dr Madhuku also urged
the about 100 villagers who attended the meeting to reject the government
sponsored constitution by voting NO in the referendum.
"The NCA is campaigning
for a NO Vote because the COPAC process excluded the people of Zimbabwe.
What is surprising is that already ZANU PF has already started campaigning
for a YES vote because they know that the ultimate document represents
nothing but their wishes. ''
Addressing the same
gathering, Alois Dzvairo, the NCA Youth Chairperson said Zimbabweans
should decide their own destiny and not be waylaid by misguided
politicians. He also blamed the inclusive government for failing
to improve the educational and health facilities in the country.
The Guruve meeting
is part of the ongoing Take Charge campaign which seeks to resist
the government sponsored constitution. The constitution making process
is a result of Article 6 of the Global
Political Agreement signed by the three political parties in
government. The process has been marred by chaos, missed timelines,
missing documents and violence since it started.
The NCA together
with the ZCTU
and ZINASU
are against the COPAC process because it falls short of a genuine
people driven constitution as espoused by the National Working Peoples
Convention of 1999, the 1st All Stakeholders Constitutional Convention,
the Zimbabwe People's Charter and reaffirmed at the 2nd Peoples
Constitutional Convention held in July 2009.
The NCA has
been calling for an Independent commission to lead the process.
Dr Madhuku was accompanied by the Acting Chairperson for Mashonaland
Central, Luke Sigauke, Blessing Vava Information Officer, Guruve
North Constituency Chairperson Canvas Matekenya.
