NCA
leadership addresses meetings in Mashonaland West
National Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
December
06, 2010
The National
Constitutional Assembly (NCA) leadership today addressed two meetings
in Mashonaland West Province. The meetings are part of the ongoing
'Take Charge' campaign, a programme that seeks to resist
a constitution to be produced by a group of parliamentarians called
COPAC.
In one of the
meetings held at Chitomborwizi in Zvimba South constituency, NCA
Chairperson Dr Lovemore Madhuku told villagers at the meeting that
the NCA's mission is for Zimbabwe to have a people driven,
democratic constitution that responds to the needs and aspiration
of the people of Zimbabwe. ''We need a constitution
that will guarantee a prosperous Zimbabwe, were all citizens are
able to get good social service delivery like free health and free
education,'' he said.
He scoffed at
COPAC saying that it wasted a lot of money that could have been
channelled to good use and improve service delivery. At another
meeting in Mhondoro Mubaira 's Monera village the NCA leader urged
villagers to vigorously campaign for a NO Vote should a referendum
be called. ''Our position as the NCA is that the constitutional
reform process should be led by an independent commission and therefore
we can only vote for a constitution that is a product of such.
This the reason
why we should reject the COPAC Draft because it was not written
by the people but the politicians of the day,'' he added.
Turning to
elections Dr Madhuku said it was unfortunate that parties in the
inclusive government are now eager to go for polls without any meaningful
reform in the electoral sector. Further, he told the gathering that
elections in Zimbabwe have proved useless as a result of violence
and manipulation by ZANU PF. At both meetings, Dr Madhuku was accompanied
by the National Spokesperson Madock Chivasa and the Provincial leadership.
The same meetings
will be held in Mashonaland East Province on Thursday 9 December
2010.
MDC
Suspends Councillor for organising NCA Meeting
The Movement
for Democratic Change (MDC) faction headed by Morgan Tsvangirai
has suspended Gutu Ward 8 MDC councillor Emmanuel Toperesu for organising
an NCA Take Charge campaign meeting held in Gutu on the 16th of
November 2010.
Toperesu was
summoned for a hearing by Masvingo Province MDC secretary Tongai
Matutu and subsequently suspended for organising the NCA meeting.
Matutu is said to have influenced the suspension of Toperesu.
The meeting
organised by Toperesu was attended by hundreds of villagers and
addressed by NCA Chairperson Dr Lovemore Madhuku. The crime of the
said councillor is that of associating himself with the NCA. As
the NCA, we wish to condemn the intolerant behaviour exhibited by
the so-called 'party of excellence' which is a clear
affront to the party's founding principles which include freedom
of association and assembly.
The behaviour
by the MDC is regrettable to say the least, and is not different
from that of their counterparts in government - ZANU PF. Equally
worrying is the overzealous Masvingo Urban legislator Tongai Matutu,
a 'mafikizolo'
(Johnny come lately) in the party who seem not to understand the
role of members of parliament. Instead of focusing on improving
the lives of the people in his constituency its shocking that Hon
Tongai Matutu is busy victimising people simply for attending NCA
meetings.
