Villagers castigate political violence
Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition
November 15, 2010

Villagers of Chiundura in the Midlands province castigated political violence and called for peaceful co-existence particularly during national processes, at a theatre discussion forum which was facilitated by Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition and Gweru Agenda. The forum, held at Gambiza Hall, Chiundura on the 13th of November 2010, was attended by 322 people (109 men and 213 women).

The discussions followed the debut performance of Simudza Mureza (Lift up the flag) by Savanna Trust drama group which tackles the issue of political violence particularly in rural areas and its negative impact on community cohesion. The drama underscores the need for reformation of perpetrators of political violence and the need to foster a culture of peaceful co-existence among communities. In addition, the drama encourages Zimbabweans to register ahead of both the referendum and possible elections in 2011 and to participate in both processes.

Participants highlighted the following issues as key during national processes;

  • The need for counselling of youths by parents on the need to maintain peace during elections and other national processes
  • The importance of voter registration and participation as this is the only way that Zimbabweans can determine their destiny
  • The need for programs which specifically target community and national leaders as are the major culprits in instigation of political violence
  • The importance of cohesion within the community since elections are a passing phase and as such should not cause antagonism

Participants further encouraged The Coalition to take the play to other communities as a tool to discourage political violence.
