Police harass crisis employees
Crisis
in Zimbabwe Coalition
October 30, 2010
Two Crisis In
Zimbabwe Coalition employees, Mfundo Mlilo and Emily Nkhungwa were
today the 25th of October 2010, questioned by Officer Commanding
Police Chitungwiza District, Chief Superintendent Makunike's
for allegedly holding an "unsanctioned meeting". Chief
Superintendent Makunike also demanded to know what the name Crisis
in Zimbabwe Coalition meant and who had sanctioned the Coalition
to hold civic education meetings. The two were only allowed to leave
after Zimbabwe
Lawyers for Human Rights intervened through lawyer Tawanda Chiurayi,
who threatened to sue in his personal capacity.
The questioning came as a result of a meeting that
the Coalition held on 23rd of October 2010. Chief Superintendent
Makunike had refused to grnat the Coalition clearance to hold the
meeting on basis that the Coalition was in the "business of
agitating people and causing unnecessary disturbances." In
a letter adressed to the Coalition 's Makunike said, "The
constitution making process was done in Chitungwiza which makes
the Coalition's request irrelevant."
The Coalition went ahead with the meeting after
consulting Copac Co-Chairperson, Honarable Douglas Mwonzora who
indicated that the constitution making process had only been suspended
and not concluded. Mwonzora noted that Chitungwiza district had
7 centres where meetings were to be re-done due to incidents of
violence.
