Muzarabani for peace campaign
Heal Zimbabwe Trust
October 25, 2010

Local community leaders in Muzarabani district met on Saturday, 23 October 2010 to discuss peace building initiatives in a bid to come up with strategies on how best they can promote peace and tolerance amongst the people in the community. The all stakeholders meeting held under the theme "kugara hunzwana" at Kapatamukombe village meeting centre was attended by 65 local leaders including sub chiefs, village heads, local pastors, councilors, spirit mediums, teachers and members from ZANU PF and MDC parties. More information was also shared around the role of the Government under the Inclusive environment, the content of the Global Political Agreement the developments and its achievements to date. The meeting also discussed what leaders at community level can do to support and promote community peace and tolerance.

Various issues were discussed during the meeting and they managed to come up with the following strategies that will help to ensure that these community leaders create a culture of tolerance and peaceful coexistence:

  • Create peace building caucus groups (peace ambassadors) that will safe guard the community from abuse by political leaders.
  • Come up with information centers were point persons will be chosen to document detailed and accurate cases of violence that will be presented to the members of the police force who will be expected to take appropriate action.
  • The local leaders also agreed to work with Heal Zimbabwe in holding five public meetings to be attended by villagers in respective communities where people will be given a platform to openly discuss about peace.

The public meetings will be held between the month of October and November 2010 in Muzarabani North and South.
