The Daily News: Coming soon
Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition
October 07, 2010

The Daily News newspaper shut down at the height of media repression in September 2003 is set to hit the streets in the following weeks, according to the Editor of the newspaper John Gambanga.

Speaking at a civil society briefing meeting held at the Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition offices, Mr. Gambanga indicated that The Daily News, which received a license in May 2010, will be launched in a few weeks time although he could not disclose the exact date. He said the delay in launching the paper was due to different issues such as the refurbishment of the printing press, not wanting others to print their newspaper and the need to have the best journalists like the ones they had before such as Sandra Nyaira, Conrad Nyamutata, Angela Makamure, Brian Mangwende, Pedzisai Ruhanya and Mduduzi Mathuthu. Gambanga noted that their area of operation was very sensitive hence the need to take time and organize proper security structures so as to avoid what happened in 2000 and 2001 when the papers offices and printing machine were bombed. He said "once bitten twice shy."

Mr. Gambanga called on civil society to support the paper when it comes out and pointed out that there is going to be a re-launch special supplement where organizations can advertise. The supplement will include the history of the paper and will also highlight the aims of the paper which is basically "Telling it like it is."

The organization has also taken gender issues into account with the Human resources manager noting that they are now women employed in its factory. Gambanga also pointed out that journalists will be sent to different training courses in line with gender mainstreaming and to be gender sensitive.

Mr. Gambanga noted that coming in late into the market should be viewed as an advantage as they will have learned from the other new players in the market. He said the paper will be a platform for sharing ideas without any bias. He pointed out that the paper will seek to capture the views of various publics and is independent of any political or economic interests.
