Prime
Minister Tsvangirai must take charge
Union
for Sustainable Democracy
September
23, 2010
The
Union for Sustainable Democracy is outraged by the news of the death
of a Movement for Democratic Change supporter yesterday following
more violent disruption of the now damned constitutional outreach
programme in Mbare.
It is abundantly
clear that ZANU PF has not the slightest intention of giving democracy
a chance in Zimbabwe. Theirs is a culture of plunder, violence,
murder and dictatorship.
We call on Prime
Minister Tsvangirai to publicly acknowledge that this is what Zimbabwe
is up against. He must realise that meetings with President Robert
Mugabe alone will not stop the violence.
Any constructive
meeting between Mugabe and Tsvangirai would be about ensuring the
arrest, prosecution and incarceration of anyone guilty of politically
motivated violence.
The time has
come for Prime Minister Tsvangirai to exercise the authority of
his high office and for the inclusive government to wrest control
of the police and the courts from ZANU PF. It is up to him to ensure
that the ZRP do their job. It is up to him to ensure that the courts
can function without let or hindrance.
To that end,
we urge Prime Minister Tsvangirai and Theresa Makone to head a high
level delegation to tour the country with a view to demanding the
arrest, prosecution and imprisonment of those guilty of violence
and intimidation.
There is no
way forward if the violence is allowed to continue.
