ZANU
PF activists disrupt CCDZ community meeting on referendum and elections
in Mahusekwa
Centre for Community Development in Zimbabwe
(CCDZ)
September 03, 2010
The Co-ordinator
of Zanu PF District Co-ordinating Committee in Mahusekwa, Tonderai
Kwaramba and Council Secretary Jennifer Mtisi yesterday disrupted
a Civic Discussion Forum organized by the Centre for Community Development
in Zimbabwe aimed at raising awareness on the referendum and minimum
conditions for free and fair elections. Kwaramba charged at the
CCDZ Programme officer Ms Tsungai Vere accusing her and CCDZ for
bias in their civic education programmes. Towards the end of the
discussion, Kwaramba erupted and asked participants to leave the
meeting and that those who declined to leave would be "dealt
with" later.
This came amid
information from the Mahusekwa police that a Superintendent Mutasa
from Marondera police had informed them to notify CCDZ not to continue
with the meeting. This was despite the fact that police had approved
the meeting. CCDZ had in its possession the letter of approval to
hold the meeting. This is the second case were police have interfered
and stopped CCDZ from holding meetings. In late June police gave
CCDZ clearance to hold a public meeting in Chivhu-Chikomba but a
day before the meeting was scheduled to be conducted , the police
said that CCDZ could not proceed citing that COPAC was already holding
its public consultation meetings in the area.
Kwaramba said
that people should not attend the meeting because CCDZ was pushing
a Western agenda of regime change. He told CCDZ that, "Mahusekwa
is our stronghold, you can't just come and influence our people
like that, we don't require such meetings here. Cde Pasirayi
(CCDZ director) hatidi zvamuri kudzidzisa vanhu kuno, kuno kuMahusekwa
tisu tiri kutonga".
People who were
eager to acquire information and attended the meeting got scared
and decided to leave the meeting immediately. This is a clear infringement
on people's rights to acquire information and freedoms of
assembly and association. We call upon ZANU PF and its members to
desist from violating human rights and allow Civil Society Organisations
to give Zimbabweans a platform to learn more about issues of governance
and democracy so that they can be in a position to make informed
decisions on issues that affect their lives.
