Crisis in Zimbabwe
Coalition in Collaboration with Transparency
International Zimbabwe (TIZ) held a community meeting at Dendera
Business Centre in Mudzi on the 6th of July 2010. The objective
of the meeting was to educate people on the constitution making
process ahead of the constitutional public consultations by the
Constitutional Parliamentary Committee (COPAC). The meeting was
also intended to bridge the information gap noted by the Coalition
during the monitoring of COPAC's outreach meetings.
The community
meeting was attended by 88 people (23 women and 65 men). Mrs Nyaradzo
Mutonhori from TIZ informed the participants about the Advocacy
and Legal Advice Centre (ALAC) program and urged people to fight
corruption in communities and in Zimbabwe. People in Mudzi were
provided with a platform to discuss constitutional issues and equipped
with information material on the constitution making process.
The outreach
team was informed that ZANU PF has selected individuals who will
speak on specific talking points during the COPAC's meetings
and those not selected are supposed to show solidarity by attending
and clapping hands during the outreach meetings.
The following
issues were raised at the meeting;
- The participants
called upon COPAC and the state to put in place measures which
will ensure that people are protected after the outreach meetings.
- There is
need for COPAC, civic groups and media to enhance publicity around
the ongoing COPAC outreach meetings.
- The government
should bring human rights violators to book.
